Skate Locations
WELL KNOWN SKATE PLACES

QUEEN’S PARK
This is the closest skatepark to Cambuslang, but it is not the best. It has a huge halfpipe (lots of vert), a fun box, a spine, a quad and a good few grind rails. The downside is that it is sometimes busy.

BELSHILL
There's only two halfpipes here, and the neds (wanks)fucked them up with hammers. Right next to the Cardinal Newman High School, and only two stops away from Cambuslang station.

KELVINGROVE PARK
Old park closed here in 1991, but they are re-developing it again because of the skating boom, we'll have more info soon. As of now Kelvingrove is for street skaters, even though there are a couple of ramps and rails scattered about (all made by locals). It’s well worth a look in the summer.

STIRLING
A medium sized concrete park, which has recently had a halfpipe and some rails added. It has a small spine, a halfpipe (same size as the one in Kippen, about 6ft), a semi bowl, slopes shaped into a kind of bowl, a quarter pipe with a kind of box and rail at the end, two bowls connected like the ones in Livi, a fun box, and ledges and rails for grinding. Good if it's not raining.

LIVINGSTON
Livi is very hard to describe. It’s like one huge big bowl, but then again it’s not. We could say that there is a halfpipe with a roll drop at the end, one huge bowl, a small bowl, a huge semi-bowl, two small semi-bowls, a 5ft quarter pipe (with vert), a sort of half pipe (it is two long quarters which are quite far from each other but we could class it as a half pipe), a long mole hill, a round mole hill and slopes galore (and I mean STEEP SLOPES!). Livi is also all concrete, and Michael’s attempt at downhilling one side of the park resulted in man’s first successful flight without engine or wind power (the landing caused maximised elbow chaffing). The best, you gotta go!

KIPPEN
It's good, but unfortunately it's the most obscure skatepark on the map. It is in the middle of the Campsie Hills, but this doesn’t stop it from being great. It is the least busy of the lot and has a small practice halfpipe, a medium sized halfpipe with an extension, two quarterpipes (one 5ft, the other 7ft), a fun box and an array of grind rails and benches. Kippen is great for a day out.

ROYAL EXCHANGE SQUARE
This is the place for Glasgow’s street skaters to go to, and you can’t miss it. It’s the one with the statue of the Duke of Wellington (cone on his head!) outside the art gallery (our hang), just off Queen Street. Kickflip, grind, generally use anything that you see, but watch out for the big 5-0!

GEORGE SQUARE
Now, lets get things straight...we respect those who fought for their country in the war, but we skated on the memorial because it is a huge thing with stairs and benchs and the plaque is away at the back. We are sorry if we caused anyone offence by doing this, but it was such a good skate. Anyway, this is quite a good skate...loadsa open space, statues with ledges and the afformentioned war memorial...it's cool, just go there to see it! If you are a tourist you are bound to come here anyway, its the REAL centre of Glasgow.

CLYDEBANK
Its ok, but its a bugger...loadsa money to get in and hire pads and helmet, the pads and helmets are total crap, and the ramps make a really annoying crash noise when you go up them! It's good practice, but you have to be really good if you wanna show off.

DUNDEE (FACTORY SKATEPARK)
This is cool...if you wanna know about it, then go to http://www.factoryskatepark.com They are supposed to be building one in Hamilton (yay!) and they are building a new one in Dundee (it's going to be around 3 times the size of the current one).

AYR
A metal skatepark, with a fun box (with a kind of quarter down the side, which makes a halfpipe with another quarter), another three quarterpipes and one slanted ramp. Add to that a few rails and that's the park. This was a vague description because nobody out of us has been for ages.

NCP
There are lots of carparks, but then one we talk of is attached to Glasgow Central station. Head towards platform 13 and walk up it, you'll see the entrance. As you go in, hide your board and walk off sort of straight forward but a bit to the left: once you have gone a wee bit, go to the nearest stairs (do this in order to dodge the camera so security don't know about skaters). Go up to the top 3 floors, they are always empty and just skate about. Despite what you may think, it's an excellent skate!

For additional information go to the shops and info page. There is also rumours of a skatepark in Kilmarnock, but there may not be.

SK8 NEWS HEADLINES

Here's the Skate Cambie news for the week (5th November 2001)

SKATING SUCKS!
Winter's setting in and it looks like we are stuck on BMXs for a while as a result of the weather. However, Mick's still been at some rad spots in Glasgow, and he's still ollieing like a muddafucka! Peace and keep skating.

DOM
Dom's now a sort of honourary Skate Cambie member. Even though he doesn't come from Cambuslang, he's been a close friend of the guys since the start and we're taking him on board. We'll have a profile up soon.

PHOTOS
We've got a photo in the camera of Mick 50-50ing a bench, and one of Dom doing a varial kickflip (there might even be more). Hopefully these ones come out unlike the last ones! We'll have them up as soon as we access a scanner (Mick's isn't working, shame)

ADVICE

Stay away from neds and coppers...they ain't friendly with boarders in the slightest! Try to be polite with security and coppers, even if they are total dickheads. Don't get stoned or drunk then attempt to skateboard aggresively...so no 9 stairs after a nine bar, no halfpipes after a half bottle! Just keep it real, believe in yourself and keep skatin!

SKATE EMERGENCIES

IF I/ONE OF MY FRIENDS GETS HURT?
If its not major, help them over to the side of the park. Get someone who knows something about these injuries over to check it out. If it is serious, call an ambulance and leave it to them.

IF SOMEONE DODGY IS HANGING ABOUT
Keep your distance. If they approach you and ask for your board just say no. If they persist, get loads of people to gang up on them. If a fight ensues, try and get away from it. The best way to hurt them is to whack them with the truck. If you want to run away, don't board because it is always quicker to sprint.

SKATE LOCATIONS

SAFEWAY CAMBUSLANG
This is the best spot in Cambie. Handrails, stairs, a kicked up bit of kerb that acts as a ramp, some waxed curbs and smoothed ground basically everywhere makes up the public part of Safeway. But to experience the place at its best, wait till it's closed and head down to the loading dock...its the livi of street! A big fucker of a ledge (bout 5ft 4in high), it's so cool for getting big air! Then, away at the back is a six set, really tight stair case but sometimes we can make it! This place is sweet, we think there could be more undiscovered gems so just get down there and look around!
THE ARCADE
The new part is crap for skating, so don't bother going! The old bit has kinda shit surface, but its quite cool...a 4ft ledge, some stairs scattered about the place, and derilict shops that have marble steps (brill for noseslides!)...it's not all derilict though, so be careful!
LIBRARY
The library is kinda piss...coupla speed bumps, and some steps, but thats it...next to Dino's Cafe, it has some stairs sets (4, 5 and 7) and a couple of ledges.
GRENVILLE DRIVE
We have a kicker, a grind rail, a small 1/4 and a manual box...its ok for DIY stuff. Plus Mick's garden has some stairs and walls.
ST. CADDOCK'S
Little is known about this place. A known source has told us that they have a grind box up there, but we've never been. The concrete looks smooth from the outside, though.
