ROTTINGDEAN DEVON TOUR 2000

The squad for all the tour was as follows: Dan Waite( goalie), Dean Calvo, Sprout, Anthony, Sheena, Lee, Brian, Martin, Ritchie, Ricki, Jamie and Matty.

STADDISCOMBE 3 ROTTINGDEAN 6

Both teams started brightly and seemed evenly matched. Saddlescombe took the lead with a well taken goal. The Hitman got the ball on the half-way line, went down the right wing, cut in and blasted the ball into the back of the net. We started to dominate the game and when the ball was passed into the area Pocket-Rocket Watts passed the ball onto Sheena Hulse who made it 2-1. On the stroke of half-time Staddiscombe won a free-kick on the edge of our area, Dan Waite made a brilliant save diving to his right, half time 2-1. Some sloppy defending saw Staddiscombe equalise early in the second-half. Martin Taylor then scored a fantastic goal, running onto the ball from outside the area the ball flew into the net. The Hitman ran with the ball into the area and gave us a 4-2 lead. Staddiscombe got back into the game when they made it 4-3, but this was their last chance and The Hitman scored another brace to make the final score 6-3 to Rottingdean. All the boys played very well but special mention must go to Matty Man who was a revelation at right-back.

MONDAY 7-7-00 THIRD DAY OF TOUR

CHADDLEWOOD 4 ROTTINGDEAN 5

We started brightly and when The Hitman went down the left wing he crossed a lovely ball into the area for Martin to head us 1-0 in front. Chaddlewood soon got back into the game with a well taken equaliser. Chaddlewood then took the lead with a bizarre goal, from a corner Dan pushed the ball onto the bar, the ball then rebounded down hit Dan and went into the back of the net. The rest of the half was evenly matched with few chances created. The beginning of the second-half will probably never be repeated in another match again. First minute The Hitman scores a wonderful equaliser. Second minute The Hitman scores an absolute belter to put us 3-2 in front. Third minute, with Rottingdean still celebrating Chaddlewood equalise. Fourth minute disaster Chaddlewood go 4-3 ahead. Rottingdean had come from behind to lead in 2 minutes only for Chaddlewood to do the same and only 5 minutes gone. From a corner I’m Getting Out Clark had a good effort cleared off the line. We soon won another corner and with the Chaddlewood keeper missing the ball Shaun "Sheena" Hulse headed the equaliser. Both teams were going all out for the win and out of the blue Sprout suffered a late two footed tackle but after treatment from the physio Kevin Watts he was able to play on. With time running out The Hitman scored the winning goal. Two games played, two wins recorded spirits were high in the Rottingdean camp, everybody had played well if not better than expected.

ROTTINGDEAN TOUR DAY 4

ROUND ROBIN BETWEEN STADDISCOMBE, OKEHAMPTON AND ROTTINGDEAN

Each team would play each other twice with each game lasting 20 minutes.

OKEHAMPTON 0 ROTTINGDEAN 0

This was an evenly matched 20 minute game. Both teams created equal number of chances.. The Hitman, Pocket-Rocket Watts and Martin had chances. I’m Getting Out Clark, Matty Man, Anthony Morrison and Sprout played well in defense. Sheena , Ricki Whiting, Brian O’Toole and Pocket-Rocket Watts played well in midfield. The Hitman and Martin Taylor should have scored one goal between them.

STADDISCOMBE 0 ROTTINGDEAN 1

This game was quiet for the first 5 minutes until a beautiful through ball by Ricki Whiting confused the Staddiscombe defense and The Hitman lobbed the goalie to make it 1-0. The friendly element of the game disappeared from the game when Pocket-Rocket Watts was brought down on his way to goal. Martin Taylor had to go off through injury and Deano came on. In the last few minutes I’m Getting Out Clark handled in the area and a penalty was awarded. The penalty was hit against the cross-bar and we won 1-0.

OKEHAMPTON 0 ROTTINGDEAN 1

For the first 15 minutes both teams were again inseperable. The Hitman dropped deep and Pocket-Rocket Watts went up front. A long goal kick from The Hitman was helped into the area by Ricki Whiting. Brian O’Toole and Sheena Hulse fooled the Okehampton defense with mis-kicks and dummies to leave an unmarked Pocket-Rocket Watts to stroke the ball into the back of the net.

STADDISCOMBE 2 ROTTINGDEAN 0

With Staddiscombe beating Okehampton twice we had to win this game to win the round robin tournament. Staddiscombe had all the early play and soon went 1-0 up. A few minutes later and we were 2-0 down. From the kick-off The Hitman went on a mazy run, as he went past his fourth player the player shouted take his legs away. When The Hitman eventually lost the ball he went back to the player who shouted out and offered to show him another reason why he is called The Hitman. The game ended bad temperedly and with it our unbeaten record.

ROTTINGDEAN TOUR DAY 5

SB FRANKFURT. A HATFUL ROTTINGDEAN 0

We were warned that SB FRANKFURT were a good team. Martin Taylor went in goal after consulting with the physio Kevin Watts as he had a pulled muscle. We held our own for about 10 minutes and then the flood gates opened. The Hitman went off for 20 minutes as his foot was causing him distress. We did not have one shot on goal as SB FRANKFURT built up a half time lead.

For the second half The Hitman came back on, Martin Taylor came out of goal and Deano went in goal. SB FRANKFURT continued to score at a regular rate. The lads took this beating in good heart and not once did the team begin arguing amongst themselves. Half way through the half the Frankfurt keeper came out on pitch, probably due to boredom. The keepers first touch on pitch was to head a goal from a corner. In the last minute Ricki Whiting nearly scored from outside the area, his long shot just curling away from the top corner.

ROTTINGDEAN TOUR DAY 6

ROUND ROBIN : STADDISCOMBE, ACTIVATE AND ROTTINGDEAN.

Same rules as Tuesday.

ACTIVATE 1 ROTTINGDEAN 0

Martin Taylor went in goal but the first thing he had to do was pick the ball out of the net as Activate scored with their first attack. After this set back we played as well as Activate but their defense proved too good for us to score.

STADDISCOMBE 0 ROTTINGDEAN 3

The lads played a lot better in this match. The Hitman won a free kick on the edge of the area, when he took it himself the ball flew into the back of the net. Now there was only one team in this match. The Hitman went on one of his mazy runs and after beating 4 defenders he buried the ball in the back of the net 2-0. All the lads were playing well and Deano was flying down the wing. The Hitman scored his hat-trick to give us a comfortable 3-0 win.

ACTIVATE 1 ROTTINGDEAN 0

Dan was back in goal but a rare mistake saw a long shot go through his hands to give Activate a 1-0 win. Again we matched Activate for the rest of the match but again we could not score. Dan made an excellent save in the last minute to stop us going down 2-0.

STADDISCOMBE 0 ROTTINGDEAN 1

This was to be our last match on tour and after the trouble on Tuesday night the tackles were going in hard. From a corner Sheena rose majestically to head us into the lead. No matter how Staddiscombe tried our boys kept them out to end the tour on a winning note, well done lads. After the match the Staddiscombe manager Geoff presented us with a momento of our tour which was greatly appreciated and summed up how hospitable this team from Devon had been.
