Inverness is the capital of the Highlands, roughly 3 hours north of Glasgow by train. It’s a good town to base yourself while exploring the Highlands – the trains from down south stop there, and there lots of buses that can take you from Inverness to more remote areas.

To be blunt, I was blown away by the sheer natural beauty of it all, and the only places I checked out were Inverness and Culloden Battlefield (site of the last battle fought on British soil, in 1746). Plus the people there are very friendly; it seems the further north you go in the UK, the friendlier the people are. Also, there are a lot of crusties and eco-warriors (we call ‘em hippies in the USA) residing in Inverness.

The River Ness, as in Loch Ness monster, runs right through the center of Inverness, theres a nice castle, snowcapped mountains are visible from there, excellent single malt scotches, and there are some spectacular churches there as well (like all of Scotland). I was only there for a couple days, and had plans to take a bus to Gairloch or Ullapool or something – Unfortunately though, I had a little too much to drink the first night and slept in the next day. Therefore I had to settle for Culloden Battlefield, which turned out to be pretty cool.

I will most definitely spend a couple weeks in the Highlands at some point (soon I hope). There are so many places I want to check out, such as the Orkney Isles and Gairloch, to name a couple… By all means, check out the Highlands if you ever get the chance - You won’t be disappointed.
