(1998 Movie) I was called in on this occasion to double British actor / singer Jimmy Nail, by Stunt Coordinator, Nick Powell. Nick had used me for a simple job on The Bill over a year ago. Still Crazy is the story of an old 70’s rock band that decides to make a come back. For my scene I had to double Jimmy Nail as he moved around the apex of a church roof..........some 60ft above the ground! The script called for Jimmys character, Les, to freely move around the roof in the blustery wind, without a harness and with no apparent fear as he had now become a roofer by trade. He is then seen to carry a man over his shoulder (who is too scared to come down by himself) down a ladder to the ground. I was up on the roof that day with the stunt coordinator and 2 other stuntmen. Due to the fact that I had to be moving around up there, I was the only one not allowed to wear a hidden harness! I was jokingly told that if I slipped I was to try and grab one of the other stuntmen who were wired off! This was also my first experience of ‘filming in reverse’. As the name suggests, this means that they would literally turn the negative around so that the cinema audience are actually seeing a mirror image of what was really filmed. The close up shots, using the actors, were filmed on a large flat school roof, on a dummy church roof, measuring only 15ft long. We had to memorise the actors movements, and then duplicate them 60ft up on the real church...but in reverse. Strange stunt this one. If Jimmy Nail ran his left hand fingers through his hair delivering dialogue, I had to do the same with my right hand, which would look like my left once reversed! I also had to carry the actor over my shoulder and down the ladder. Surprisingly, they decided to allow me to carry the actor instead of a stuntman, although a stuntman was standing by. I had to climb up and down a ladder for the best part of an hour with a heavy guy over my shoulder. I’m not sure which was greater, the pressure on my back and legs, or the pressure not to drop the leading man of the film on his head!! The stunt was edited well, so the audience believe Jimmy Nail was really up there on that church roof, and really carried that guy all the way down the ladder over his shoulder. I enjoyed the day and was pleased with the result. |
