DAVID HERRIDGE - 158. 1998 SOUTHERN REGIONAL CHAMPION
RESPONDING TO MY REQUEST FOR DETAILS ABOUT DAVID'S RACING HISTORY - HE REPLIED, WITH THE FOLLOWING E-MAIL:-
Thank you for your mail. I think this could be a long one for me to fit everything in. I can't even remember my whole racing career myself. It started in 1987 when I first joined the Adur club. I raced 2 wheel drive off-road for a season. I remember my 1st race. I drove down the straight on the offroad track, turned a corner and all the wheels fell off!!
I think it was 1988 I started to race stock cars. I remember having my first go, on a driver called Bob Mitchell's car. You may, or may not remember him. He was well known for his throttle control!! This of course was before Adur even had an inside barrier!!
My Uncle, Martin Herridge also started racing at the same time as me. I forget his racing number now, and in 1989 we both began to race for the championship. At the end of the year we both had exactly the same score and exactly the same throw away. The club championship was given to me on the basis that I had most wins. My Uncle then retired from racing, saying that it should have been a draw.
The biggest influence on me throughout that time, was John Allen. I learnt from him all the pushing and contact tactics, the best line to choose (my uncle also helped me with that one), and of course throttle control. With practice, and more practice, and even more practice, careful tyre choices and excellent mechanic work from my father, my youthful quick reactions and car setup proved to be very effective.
Another big influence on me was Mick Betts. I have also known him for many years and I remember losing to him on many occasions, when he used to run the old Hastings track.
At about this time, I believe I started to move up a level. My chassis changed from a mark 3 Mardave, to an underslung lightweight Middleton (I did have a standard Middleton but it lasted about a week!).
With this car I raced at Yorkshire, Nottingham, Leicester and Coventry, all the big tracks and even the old Lilford Track. In my travels I was influenced by Mike Chilvers, who wrote for RCMC at the time. I remember one incident in particular when he held a tight line round a corner at Yorkshire, and couldn't believe that I overtook him on the inside!! These were probably my best days of racing, but also the days when I won the least. I would go to a National meeting, camp overnight and have no expectations of winning at all.
Moving on to more recently, I bought a second hand John Elliot chassis from Stuart Watson, a driver who raced a successful, but short career. This chassis and another the same, I raced for a couple of seasons, reasonably succesfully, as the second chassis won and came second in 2 southern rounds. My final southern round victory came with my new Prostock chassis and clenched the southern title last year. This season, however I am not even a member of a club as work has taken priority.
Tyres: I reccommend all Ufra compounds, especcially Ufra pinks on the back.
Chassis: I reccommend either the Prostock, or the John Elliot.
Engine: I reccommend the rear exhaust Nova Rossi.
Setup: Have your car so that it is very responsive, thus you can avoid accidents. Oversteer is better than understeer.
A spoiler is essential, and find a sponsor. For a long time I was sponsored by RodSpeed and Pyecroft engineering.
For NEW drivers, IGNORE everything I just said, go out and buy a Middleton chassis, an OS engine, and try to go round without hitting the barriers, learn to control your left thumb!!
Dave, 158.
MANY THANKS TO DAVID. # 158.

Driver profile #2. GARY CLAPHAM, 327.
Living just a couple of miles from Skegness stadium I have always enjoyed full size stock cars, in particular BriSCA formula ones. I remember many times going to watch Stu Smith, Frankie Wainman and Len Wolfenden battle it out around the small Skegness oval. I raced off- road buggies for a while, but this stopped when I went to University, from reading the magazines, I was always aware of R/C stock cars, however there wasn't a track or MODEL SHOP locally. When returning from University, I happened to stumble across Skegness Oval Racing Club. I decided it was for me, so went and bought a couple of magazines and decided to sort out some bits. I bought an Irvine blue top engine, and a Tennant chassis, however after a couple of weeks it lay there gathering dust. After a couple more years, I decided to complete the job and started racing in 1997. I haven't won much, however I have learned no end about chassis design and set up, and other aspects related to model stock car racing. I also have been to the Worlds at Coventry, and the Euros at NORA, and I have also raced at Leicester and Nottingham.
More recently I have changed chassis to a Fox chassis and flat style engine mounts, an OPS engine which has allowed me to progress to a red top! Hopefully in 2000 I will be able to race more often at other tracks and I am looking forward to the worlds at Moat Farm.(At S.O.R.A.,in SEPT.2000 - Ed)
My recommendations :-
Tyres: Ones that work, and don't cost an arm and a leg.
Chassis: One that isn't bent! I don't think there is much difference between any chassis, except if the suspension geometry has changed, and if so, it would be custom made.
Engine: OPS, enough said!.
Set up: Remember that big isn't always best, don't have too much steering lock, use stagger to help you round the bends.
MANY THANKS TO GARY. #327.
