Introduction

Blake's 7
What is Blake's 7?

Blake's 7 was a television series produced by the BBC between 1978 and 1981. It followed the adventures of a group of freedom fighters, led by Roj Blake, as they attempted to destroy the Terran Federation. Four series were made, totalling 52 episodes. The final season finished on a cliff-hanger and this is where the sequel project begins. A book was produced in 1984 to continue the adventures but I and many other fans did not like it. Consequently this project ignores the book. A radio play set during series 4 was broadcast in 1998 and a second in 1999. There were rumours of a TV movie to be made sometime in 2002 produced by and starring Paul Darrow (Avon).

The Blake's 7 Sequel Project
What is the Blake's 7 Sequel Project?

The project is my attempt to tell the story of what happened after the Blake's 7 TV series ended. This is a fan fiction site but rather than one story it will run one episode at a time through 52 episodes (i.e. 4 series of 13 episodes). Each episode is presented in the form of a script (see below). The story continues directly on from the end of "Blake" (the final episode of the original series). This is my story and so the actions of the various characters will depend on my view of those characters in the original series. This can be a problem at times as some episodes contradict others in their portrayal of the individuals involved. My own perceptions of the crew are discussed elsewhere in this project. I might as well state now that my favourite character is Avon, closely followed by Vila. My stories may tend towards these two at the expense of the others. If this becomes the case then I can only apologise in advance.

When will the episodes be posted?

I was originally hoping to update this site with a new episode every month but finding the time to write seven thousand words has become more and more difficult. I am now aiming for roughly every two months although regular readers know this does not happen a lot. In addition I may also change previously posted episodes if I see a better way of doing, saying or explaining something. This has already been done several times with the first episode "Recovery" to get it to the point where I'm happy with it. Each script has a "Last Update:" date at the bottom. In general I will try not to change the actual plot merely the wording used. Character profiles, comments, etc will also be updated at the same time.

What will happen?

I have planned this project to run for four series. I have already worked out the main details and plot points for each of the main episodes. A few episodes have not been planned yet and will be 'stand alone' episodes which do not advance the overall story. These will be slotted in whenever I need to fill in a gap in a series.

As for the plot:

  • At least three major characters from the original series will be killed off (in addition to Dayna who is already dead in the first episode).
  • Several guest characters from past episodes will reoccur.
  • Season Cliff-hangers: All four series will end with cliff-hanger episodes.
  • I also have four 'feature length' specials planned.
    • The first will deal with the adventures of the Liberator before Roj Blake, Avon and Jenna were put on board in "Space Fall".
    • The second will be the story of the Galactic War which takes place between the original series 2 and series 3.
    • The third will resolve the cliff-hanger from the fourth season and set up a possible new series of adventures.
    • The fourth will be a fun story involving a Blake's 7, Babylon 5, Star Trek, Sliders crossover. This is already being written but will no doubt change as the series still being made advance.

Why write the stories as scripts?

I cannot write stories well as a straight forward book. At school I always lost marks for punctuation and grammar. So that I don't have to spend ages checking through to get the grammar right I am writing scripts which allow me to concentrate on the story. If anyone wants to rewrite the scripts into stories fine. While we are on the subject if anyone else wants to write stories for my new series please feel free. I might even incorporate them into the project as long as they don't contradict any stories I am working on.

What else will be added to the project?

The encyclopaedia section which existed on previous versions of this website has been shelved. The final version of the Original Series Guide is now online although comments may still be added from time to time.

When did this project begin?

Perhaps in 1995/6 during my first year at university when I bought my first Blake's 7 video (Volume 19: "Moloch" and "Death-watch") and then resolved to collect the rest only to discover that the first two series were no longer available and the last two were shortly being withdrawn. (I partially solved this by buying all the remaining videos (12) over a short period (less than six weeks), and then by getting a friend to tape some episodes from Sky for me. I have now seen all the episodes.

Maybe a better place to start would be when I discovered all the material and fan fic on the internet. I soon began to collect this and put it all together into my own comprehensive guide to the show. I was thinking about putting it on the web but it grew too large (256MB at the last count) and anyway most of the content is down to other people.

I still wanted to do my own site though. Like most people who saw the last episode ("Blake") I tried to imagine what came next. I read the novel "Afterlife" but again like most people I hated it. I began to write my own sequel (I couldn't do worse than the 'official' sequel) trying to recapture the spirit of series 3 which I liked the best (I had only seen series 3 and 4 up to then). Having watched series 1 and 2 I revised my ideas to reintroduce the freedom fighter aspect which had been lost to a large degree but still keep some of the atmosphere of series 3. I have always felt that Avon is a much more interesting character than Roj Blake although the rivalry between them was fun. I never felt that the rivalry between Avon and Tarrant was as good, which is why I wanted to introduce another character to the mix.

In early 1998 I really started to think seriously about doing this site and creating a sequel. I always liked the Babylon 5 idea of having a complete story from day one. In order to do this I set out a general outline for the first four series of a sequel and then planned each important episode for the first three. This forward planning allows me to set up things well in advance. I just hope I complete the project or this will all have been pointless.

How's it going?

Four and a half years in and I'm a bit behind schedule. I was hoping to write one series of 13 episodes per year but I've only got to the middle of the second. Never mind, perhaps I'll do better in the next year (I doubt it).

What happens if I don't finish the project?

I will publish the episode guide I am using to write the scripts in order to fill in the remainder.

If anyone wants to ask any other questions about the project or a particular script please email me and I will either reply by email or in the appropriate section of the project.

Who is the author?

My name is Neil Blissett. I am 26 years old and live in Northamptonshire, England. I am currently working as a production administrator but any good job offers (including script writer) will be considered. This is the second internet site I have set up. The first was a business site for my father.
In addition to Blake's 7 and Babylon 5 I also like Red Dwarf, Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek, Farscape and various other sci-fi series.

NOTE: The scripts for the original series episodes were taken from the lysator archive. I have corrected any mistakes I found in the scripts and added the html code to make them fit in with the rest of the project.

The Alternate Sequel Project - Blake's Legacy

The Alternate Sequel Project is a spin off from the main Sequel Project. In July 1999 Martin Odoni sent me a copy of his first script based on the episode "Recovery" but greatly expanded. I subsequently hosted his scripts on my website until June 2003 when Martin created his own site at http://havetstorm.tripod.com/blakes7/ . He and his brother Russell also wrote the collection of interlude adventures A Federation Officer.
